What is CC and BCC in email?

This short article by Google Droid simplifies the definition of CC and BCC in email.

What is CC and BCC in email?

CC’s full form is Carbon Copy and BCC’s full form is Blind Carbon Copy. Earlier days before the internet and email services, people were used to writing on a paper, and to keep a copy or proof of that paper they used a carbon paper. This is just like that.

What is CC stands for?

‘CC’ in email stands for ‘Carbon Copy’. When you used any email services including Gmail, Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc. you must have seen the field called ‘CC’ as shown on the above image. That means when you enter an email or multiple email address in the ‘Cc’ field, you are sending a carbon copy or the same copy of that email to these persons. For example, you are writing an email to example1@gmail.com and you have put example2@gmail.com and example3@gmail.com in the Cc field then examples 2& 3 will get the same email that example 1 will get.

What is BCC stands for?

‘BCC’ in email stands for ‘Blind Carbon Copy’. When you used any email services including Gmail, Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc. you must have seen the field called ‘BCC’ as shown on the above image. That means when you enter an email or multiple email address in the ‘Bcc’ field, just like the ‘Cc’ field you are sending a blind carbon copy or the same copy of that email to these persons. For example, you are writing an email to example4@gmail.com and you have put example5@gmail.com and example6@gmail.com in the Bcc field then examples 5& 6 will get the same email that example 4 will get. That’s it.

Difference between CC and BCC in email:

The difference between CC and BCC in email is very easy. When you send a copy of your email to the CC email address then the ‘Cc’ email recipients will be able to see other ‘Cc’ email addresses that you have sent this email. But in the ‘Bcc’ case it’s totally opposite, means the recipients of ‘Bcc’ email addresses will not be able to see other email ids you have sent this email.

Note: Do not use ‘Cc’ or ‘Bcc’ for sending any marketing campaign as it will be marked up as spam. Instead, use some premium email services like MailChimp.
